A Summer Shoe Wardrobe

Brora Pom Pom Metallic Espadrilles
It seems crazy to discuss summer shoes on a day like today.  Currently my feet are encased in thick wool socks and then stuffed into boots.  Tonight we are expecting a winter storm of freezing rain and ice pellets, but never mind, let's pay a visit to the sunny land of the espadrille sandal.

I've long been a fan of this type of sandal with its jute covered wedge heel and fabric construction.  I had a fairly large collection from JCrew that I wore for a few summers until I finally chucked them, they were stained and sort of squished looking.  These types of shoes don't last forever, but the good news is that they are not very expensive either.  It's not too trying to replace them every few years.
Brora Canvas Wedge Espadrilles
I bought mine in navy.
So this is my replacement year and I've been thinking about where to source my new espadrille sandals for some time.  I want to be espadrille-prepared so that on the first hot day I can buckle some on with a linen or cotton dress.
Brora Metallic Wedge Espadrille Sandal
In the end I chose these espadrille sandals from Brora.  It's nice to have a bit of variety in an espadrille collection: a higher heel with a fancy pom-pom, a solid navy pair (very practical) and one in a metallic, to be worn with white or black.
I also find that while I prefer a closed toe for everyday wear  I don't like the feeling of my entire foot being encased in a stiff canvas, (like these shoes from JCrew).
The other nice bit on the Brora options?  The ankle strap which gives some support and also dresses up the look of the shoe.
I'll be wearing these sandals all through July and August, and you won't have heard the last of them: they'll feature prominently in the summer colour story!

Of course summer demands some sort of sensible sneaker option, if only for riding a bicycle or working in the garden.
Our Tabitha calls these "sand shoes".
Sand Shoes
Brora Gym Sneakers
For a real bit of dressing up I have some gold pumps from Chie Mihara that I bought last year.
Festive Chie Mihara gold sandals.

On my journey to my final choice of Brora I did dabble in a bit of Tory Burch.
I really like the look of her wedge shoes with that stacked wooden heel.  They are offered in this terrific neutral tan which can go with just about any outfit you might wear.
I tried on the Tory Burch wedge heels but the fit was completely off.
I ordered a pair when I bought my stripey summer bag from Tory Burch but I quickly discovered that the fit was off on me.  You can see in the photo that my high arch rises above the side of the shoe.  I found these shoes comfortable through the toe box but then too wide across the middle of my foot, there was no question that I had to send them back.
I also tried on a pair of the famous Tory Burch Reva flats but they were a disaster on my foot.  A high arch is more comfortable in some sort of heel, so once and for all I've given up on the idea of wearing ballet flats, even though I find the look so charming.

If I could wear ballet flats I would order these pretty shoes from Brora.
Brora Plaited Ballet Pumps

These JCrew ballet flats went in my donate box.
I wore them around NYC last May and they killed my feet.
What does your summer shoe wardrobe look like?

The frock has accessories just waiting for it.
JCrew silk shoes and clutch handbag 2007.
Another frock has made its way back from rehab and it is one of my favourites.

This is quite an old J.Crew silk dress, I've probably owned it for about five years.  It was unworn that entire time due to the uncomfortable synthetic lining.
The dress has a fabric belt and some deep pleating to create a full skirt.
It has a tank-style neckline and is quite a 1950's silhouette.
Here, below, you can see the new lining set in across the neckline.  My tailor did a wonderful job, in fact she herself was very pleased with the way it turned out.  She loved the colour.
The new soft silk charmeuse lining.
You can see the silk charmeuse is a pretty good match for the silk taffeta of the dress.
The total cost for this Frock Rehab was $90, the silk charmeuse was $45 and the tailoring job another $45.
(If you are interested in sending your own frocks in for some rehab here is the source for my silk charmeuse.)
Enjoy your day!

Mop Philosophy

I've been thinking lately about the definition of Mop Philosophy.  At one time I had a little blurb about it somewhere on the blog, and if I remember correctly it alluded to an idea of a little stopping place to discuss issues (of a non-pressing nature) that might circle around the mind while engaging in mundane tasks, like mopping.
That's not quite the whole of it though.  Really, I have to say that I think Mop Philosophy can be defined as little ideas or conversations that can bolster life in small ways.  Anything comforting, mentally uplifting, visually beautiful or inspiring that can somehow improve life even in a tiny way has the ability to lead us up the path to The Good Life.
When I first began studying philosophy at University I was fortunate to attend classes with a really bright young fellow who quickly became a friend.  His name was Marcus and he was gifted with the sort of intelligence that made studying philosophy easy for him (unlike me he could scrawl out the answers to logic problems without crying!)
I reacted with quite a bit of disappointment when he told me he was dropping out of the program at the end of our second year.  He could no longer see the point in studying philosophy, unless it was to discover ways in which to live The Good Life.  This, he assured me, could be accomplished by reading Bertrand Russell in the park.  In fact he had become convinced that this was the only point to studying philosophy, and his new park-bench method the only method which could come to any kind of graceful thinking.
I don't know what happened to Marcus but I have found myself thinking of him over the years.  He was definitely onto something and I know that the memory of that last conversation I had with him led in some way to Mop Philosophy.
For this I have to thank him, I've really enjoyed discussing those non-pressing issues: wardrobe ideas, household organizing and menu planning, these are the small things that can improve our lives and the lives of those around us.
I've been reading some Big Names in philosophy these last weeks, and the interesting thing is that at the end of the day even those brilliant 17th century philosophers like Leibniz felt that the true goal of philosophy was to find ways in which to improve our lives, bit by bit.  Then, as now, a major preoccupation was winding around ideas of explaining evil in a world which had been conceived of by an omnipotent God.  One of the popular (if dismissive and shallow) ideas that Leibniz left in his writings is that we live in "the best of all possible worlds" yet it was really the metaphysical proofs of God's existence that were his true gifts to us.
So I guess my Mop Philosophy this week has been thinking in small ways about big ideas, and this too I find bolstering.  One particular trick I recommend is to read a few pages of something thick and inspiring before embarking on those mundane tasks (like the never-ending mopping).  This has the ability to occupy the mind and offset anxiety, and sometimes at the end of the kitchen floor cleaning something new and beautiful might set itself up in the Old Bean where it didn't exist before.  That, I guess, is the ultimate goal of Mop Philosophy.

I think the flower shop really outdid themselves this time with the flowers of the month.

Yesterday we had more snow but these blooms were singing to me all day from their sweet-pea jug.
Have a lovely Sunday.  I've been having a putter-around weekend which has included tucking away my winter wardrobe (I'm ignoring the weather).  I've got my spring uniform and spring and summer colour story almost sorted, one of my favourite things to do and discuss on the blog as you know.
I'll be back on Tuesday with some exhaustive frock-talk!

Spring and Summer Wardrobe Organization

$

I spent this past weekend storing away my winter clothes and setting up my spring and summer wardrobe.
I'm really trying to simplify things this year.  My goal has never been a minimal wardrobe yet I seem to be fluttering in that direction.  I still like to stick to a colour story, it helps to narrow down shoe and bag choices as well as outerwear, and it does lend itself to the idea of a minimal wardrobe.

Still, my spring and summer closet includes three bag choices and nine pairs of shoes so I guess I'm not much of a minimalist quite yet (even if the wardrobe I'm looking at is rather calming somehow, the colour palette simple and the frocks and outfits set out and ready to wear).
The stripey straw bag I purchased from Tory Burch seems to have set the tone.  It's perfect for summer as it's a real toss-in bag and super casual.  I love the blues and greens on the straw background and this is the colour story that has stuck, with the exception of a bit of salmon pink thrown in along the way.
Casual linen frocks.

As for getting outfits organized this summer:  I just don't want to have to think about it.  Simple dresses, Liberty print bathing suits, even denim and white tee shirts seem right somehow.

Liberty print bathing suit with a matching button front shirt.
I keep dreaming of swimming in lakes and paddling canoes.
White Liberty print one piece, Brora Liberty print bikini, JCrew one shoulder swimsuit.
Liberty belt from JCrew and a Brora cover up in a neutral shade.
Prepare yourself for DaniBP in jeans and tee shirts.  You might want to take my temperature when I tell you this but I've been wearing them all the time.
Yup, jeans.  I own two pairs and they are both Goldsign Jenny which have a great fit.
The sneakers are from Brora.

I bought a package of white tee shirts from Everlane.
They are quite basic but very soft and were a great price.

You might remember my post on the Kiel James Patrick shirts.
I'll definitely be wearing them all summer with my two skirts (one navy, the other in a neutral oatmeal shade) but I've found a good transition for the skirts for spring.
Navy skirt.

Oatmeal pleated skirt.
I found a couple of older JCrew cashmere twinsets on the JCA Exchange.
Cashmere twinset with my navy summer skirt.
I wore this yesterday.
One is sort of a neutral beige and the other a dark brown.  I've been wearing them this week with the skirts and they really solve that transition-to-spring outfit problem, they are warm enough yet they are not winter clothes!  I recommend looking at the JCA exchange, these twinsets were purchased for about $30 each and the quality is super, they are older JCrew pieces (they were in fact made in Hong Kong, that puts them at about 12 years old if I remember correctly).
Dark brown cashmere twinset with the oatmeal summer skirt.
As soon as the temperatures rise I'll be rotating through those Kiel James Patrick shirts, pairing them with my skirts, super simple.  They are a soft, sturdy yet light oxford cotton and have the long sleeves I prefer for summer sun protection.
Three shirts: blue, white and pink.
Somehow this salmon pink is really appealing to me this year, I don't have much of it but I think it breaks up the colour palette a bit.
Salmon pink chinos from JCrew 2011.
White linen blazer from JCrew 2012.
One of my favourite summer pieces is my white linen blazer.  It is fully lined in cotton and can be worn with almost anything.
Shades of salmon pink: chinos, shirt and Hermes scarf.
My Hermes scarf in a pale pink is getting loads of use these days.  I never have learned how to tie it properly but it seems to always look good regardless of tying skill.
Brooks Brothers Cotton Trench Coat
I've been wearing it with another key transition-to-spring piece: my navy Brooks Brothers cotton trench (which has a brilliant zip-out lining in wool flannel and bemberg, the trench itself has a full bemberg lining).
This trench is great over jeans and a white tee shirt with sneakers or over my skirts and sweater sets with heels.  I just add the scarf and the whole thing is easy and feels pulled together.  Everything DOES look good covered with a trench coat, my good friend WMM agrees!

When the weather gets really warm I'm planning on wearing my range of blue shirtdresses, I have three of them in various shades of blue.
They'll be easy to wear around with a pair of navy blue espadrilles and either the stripey straw tote bag or a smaller navy and pink bag I bought from Kiel James Patrick.
Three blue shirtdresses with navy espadrille sandals and a summery bag from KJP.

Platinum espadrilles from Brora.
I needed to buy some sandals this year and the ones I ordered from Brora are really beautiful and so comfortable.  The added benefit is that they set off my older frocks.  The navy silk frock with the brass buttons, above, is six years old but I think these new sandals give it a fresh start.
Of course the platinum espadrilles look terrific with linen, both white and neutral.

These fancy pom pom espadrilles from Brora set off an old JCrew silk patterned dress I bought on ebay for $20.
As you know I love a good handbag but summer really calls for some casual options.  I've been using my dark brown Louis Vuitton (I like pairing it with the navy cotton trench coat) but for the warmer weather I'll be storing it away.
I decided to buy a smaller bag to use on days when the big straw bag overwhelmed me.  This bag, below, from Kiel James Patrick is fun and whimsical and was very well priced for something so original and made in the USA.
Kiel James Patrick Cape Codder Bag
I've included the link though they seem to be sold out at the moment, if you're interested in the Cape Codder I would check back in on KJP later in May, they're probably making some up right now!

My other bag option for the summer probably won't see much use in the really warm weather, unless of course I have to wear my black suit or dress to some event.
Black Smythson bag and Brora spring dress coat.
You might remember my Brora spring dress coat which I wrote about here.
I plan to keep it in my wardrobe all through the summer, I think it will be a smart thing to wear out to chilly theatres even when the weather is stinking hot!
Brora dress coat with a black silk patterned Brora frock.
Plain black silk sleeveless frock by Kate Spade (2012).
I've tried to do a sort of "count" of the items that comprise this wardrobe and colour story.  In the past I've taken on a sort of hoarding mentality at the start of a season, reasoning that if I were planning to wear blue linen shirtdresses I should try to collect several in that category.
As a semi-reformed hoarder I think two or three is enough in any sort of category, it's simpler and saves time, space and money.
The frock options of a semi-reformed hoarder.
Three in light colours, three in blues, two in patterned silk and one in linen-silk.
The shoes might seem excessive but summer is a time for options, my winter shoe wardrobe is definitely smaller (though maybe not including the boots).
As you can see I have three pairs of espadrilles, three pairs of Chie Mihara pumps, one pair of dressy black Kate Spade pumps (for the black skirt suit, a year-round wardrobe staple, and for the black dress-Brora coat category) one pair of navy Brora sneakers and a pair of dark navy heeled Brooks Brothers loafers.
Spring and summer shoe wardrobe: nine pairs.
The bags wait: the KJP Cape Codder stored in the excellent cardboard box it arrived in, Smythson Antonia wrapped in her own blue frock and the optimistic-looking Tory Burch stripey straw bag.
Now we just need warm weather and sunshine!

Have you been eating lots of salads with nuts?  Me too.  I've stopped trying to lightly toast the walnuts however, I'm too easily distracted and let's face it, there's no saving charred walnuts.
"Sheep on Mars" painted by my friend Pat.
I've definitely been noticing a theme among some of my artwork: sheep.
Blue and white, by a moody Czech artist.

The first painting I ever bought, a watercolour, "Gentle Beasts".
We may not be going to Paris this year but that doesn't mean we can't gaze fondly at the receipt from our favourite steak frites place.
I keep the receipt on the fridge, it reminds me of Paris.
I set up a chair in the front hall and added a vintage mohair throw to hide the red wine stain on the cushion.
It might be spring but I'm still enjoying winterish foods like roasted vegetables, how about you?

Liberty Wrap Belt
A wrap belt is not something that I would think of as "my style".  A bit bohemian and loose, I tend to prefer something with a bit more structure.
A couple of years ago I was often trying things outside of my personal style, just to see what I could come up with.  I must have ordered this Liberty Wrap Belt from JCrew during one such time.
My Liberty Wrap Belt from 2011.
I wear mine all the time!  I have this simple Liberty shift dress that I found at The Bay last spring, and I immediately paired it with the wrap belt.  It's a different pattern but the colours mesh well and I do like a smaller Liberty print paired with a larger counterpart.
JCrew still carries these wrap belts, in different patterns now of course.  I think they are a fun summer addition to any sort of plain shift dress, they add a bit of waist definition and colour for a low price.
The current ones come in either yellow or navy, and you can see them here.
Do you wear wrap belts?  How do you like the Liberty versions?

Joe Fresh Tee Shirt
As the horror of the factory collapse in Bangladesh has unfolded I'm sure that I'm not the only one thinking about corporate responsibility and the ethics of cheap tee shirts.

This terrible situation reminded me of a client of a good friend of mine.  My friend works in environmental law and one of her long-standing clients is a Canadian manufacturer (whose products are quite ordinary, nothing fancy).  I was surprised when she told me some time ago that she regularly visits the client's manufacturing facilities around the world with a team of engineers to make certain that the factories are complying with environmental, safety and labour regulations.  Regulations in accordance with the values of the client, not the local governments of these far-flung places.  She's been doing this for nearly 30 years.
"That must cost a pretty penny" was my comment.  Of course, she replied, but if you don't take these steps you'll never know the truth about the manufacturing of your products.

In the early days of the Bangladesh tragedy I had to rub my eyes when I read this claim by Loblaw spokeswoman Julija Hunter :
“In the context of Joe Fresh manufacturing, the amount of production from the building was small,” she said in an e-mail. “But I want to be clear that my confirmation of this does not in any way diminish that we feel that this is tragedy.”  (source)

The amount of production was small, meaning what?  Does that make them responsible in a "smaller" way?  Excuse me but this is not an either/or situation.

The Globe and Mail is covering this story again today:

"...retailers that do send their senior officials to factories overseas, including Bangladesh, say it’s crucial.
“There is, of course, a need for more retailers to go in and do hands-on verifications,” Jeanette Skjelmose, sustainability manager at IKEA in Sweden, said in a telephone interview. “You have to go there. You have to verify yourself … That needs to happen to a much larger degree.”
She said IKEA does both internal and third-party audits of its factories – it has 1,200 in all, including six in Bangladesh that produces textiles such as draperies and sheets. Many audits are done without advance notice.
She said many retailers don’t have their own officials who go to overseas factories – some don’t even send a third party – they simply have the overseas supplier sign a paper that it will comply with safety requirements, she said.
“You have to dig deep and you have to want to find out the truth and not be seduced by nice words,” she said." (source)

You Can't Handle The Truth
Loblaw Cos. Ltd has just reported a 40% increase in profits for the first quarter of the year.  They make a billion dollars a year on the Joe Fresh brand.

I'm sure you know what I think they should do with some of that money.

I've never been a big consumer of the Joe Fresh brand.  This was mostly due to the chemicals I would smell on the fabrics anytime I stopped to have a look at the clothing and shoes set up in the last aisle of one of our grocery stores.  I suspected their environmental regulations weren't up to any standards I could feel good about yet after the lives lost in Bangladesh I know that the problems run far deeper and have led to the worst kind of consequence.

Families are on tight budgets these days and I know it's difficult to find affordable clothes.  Everlane make tee shirts at their factory in Los Angeles and they sell them for $15.  You can see the factory for yourself right here.

Brora is a privately owned company with tight profit margins and strong ethics.  You can learn more about their philosophy right here.

Our governments are in some way responsible.  The Canadian government paved the way to Bangladesh by dropping the 18% duty and tariff fees on importing products from that country.  It's not enough to ban the Joe Fresh brand.  Our governments need to hear from us too.

For the perspective from the UK you can read a post by Make Do Style: The Bag of Death.

Wearing Linen

I love linen for summer but not the fancy sort.  Forget about trying to wear linen suits or trousers, you'll end up a rumpled mess.  I like linen as a casual focal point, paired with something sharp and worn on the weekends.
I'd wear the Organic Linen Printed Skirt, above, with a simple clean-lined tank top in either white or navy, slim fitted and no-fuss.

I adore the linen shirt, below.  It is the Organic Linen Printed Smock in "sky flower".  I'm crazy for blue and white just now, and this pattern is so pretty and fresh.  I'd wear the smock with a pair of close fitting cropped jeans in any wash, dark or light.  Or with white denim: now you're talking.
More of the sky blue... this Textured Linen Skirt would be so pretty with a simple plain white tee shirt. Add your sneakers and your beach bag.
Sky Blue
Linen and Cotton Textured Jumper

The linen jumper in the same tones is the perfect summer sweater.  Again I'd keep it really simple: white denim jeans or pencil skirt, hair in a pony tail, some espadrille sandals, gin and tonic.

One of the stand-out pieces of Brora's summer collection is this Organic Linen Tunic.  It comes in this stunning Matisse cobalt blue but it also comes in white: dreamy.

It's finally warm enough that I can start thinking about wearing linen!  If I was to add anything to my spring and summer closet I'd throw in a couple of these casual linen pieces: really feminine yet so easy to wear.
Are you buying any linen this summer?

I've decided to plant a flower garden this year and the excitement is palpable.  Really there was an air of general delirium this past weekend with our first taste of spring sunshine and heat.

I've given up my idea of growing vegetables on my own, not much of a farmer really.  I think I'd rather go buy vegetables from real farmers at the market.   This leaves a big sunny space in my garden to grow flowers for cutting.

I'll be growing some flowers from seeds and crossing my fingers that the full sun will do most of the work.
I bought some plants at the nursery.  I don't know about you but I go crazy buying plants at the nursery, I managed to control myself by bringing this small basket.  I made myself leave after I filled it.

We went for a hike in the woods.
I think moss in the sunshine is one of the most beautiful sights on this fair Earth.

Our provincial flower, the Trillium, is out.  This is a special event as it only lasts two weeks or so in the spring.
It means the cold winter is over and the gardens are back!
I hope you had a lovely weekend and that your own Monday is extra fine.

Back To Black

I blame Antonia.
Years ago I owned a very small wardrobe consisting of black things with some black shoes and a bit of denim.  I had a black coat and a shabby black bag, and there was a boiled wool sweater coat in my closet too, in black of course, with a round collar and big pockets.
Those days are long gone but sometimes I fantasize about going back to those simple closet times.  I think this is why I like packing up for holidays, I get to create a capsule wardrobe of very few pieces with a co-ordinating bag and coat.
MrBP bought me the Smythson Antonia Small Top Handle Bagas a special gift and it is the black handbag of my dreams.  It is perfection.  Sometimes I just like to look at it for a little while before I wrap it back up in the soft blue dust bag.
I've used the bag quite a bit, every time we go out it in the evening or to the theatre it makes an appearance, my little friend Antonia.  I've also been wearing my Brora Tweed Coat constantly, basically with the same Brora print silk dress under it and Antonia loves that coat.

But lately Antonia is trying to tell me something and it has to do with black frocks.  I think she wants to take over my wardrobe and live out her days as the shining star she is.  So I've been looking at black silk dresses with her in mind.  I found some nice ones at Brooks Brothers.
Look, Brooks Brothers is also making too-short dresses.
One of the things I like about the Brooks Brothers site is that you can Ask A Question.  How fun is this, and necessary, especially considering most online shopping sites do a poor job of describing materials and product origin.

If you click on to this Silk Drawstring Bow Dressyou might notice that a certain MrsDBP has in fact Asked A Question.  Guys, it was me!  What do you think I asked?  I think you can guess.

That's right I asked about the lining of the silk  dress, above, and it is in fact silk.

I might have asked the same question about the Silk Thin Strap Dressshown below.  Yes this one is lined in silk as well.
It's nice to know that Brooks Brothers is making these silk-lined dresses.  Of course they do cost a pretty penny but there are occasional promotions (like the Friends and Family 25% discount on offer today).

Don't worry, Antonia might think she is the boss of me but she really isn't.  I'm sticking to my wardrobe plan and avoiding the call to go Back to Black.

Enjoy your weekend!  I don't know about you but I'm going to see Gatsby, I can't wait.

I've been thinking about this concept we've talked about : Mop Philosophy Book Club.  I have an idea: I think we should read classic books.  I have a couple of reasons for this, one being that the classics are easier to find at libraries etc, the other being that contemporary novels already have nine million reviews and discussion groups online.  I discovered this when I googled Life After Life, Kate Atkinson's new book (which I recommend by the way).
I think we'd want to run the Book Club every six to eight weeks, which would give us plenty of time to read the novel, compile some theory behind the book, and think on what we've taken from the novel as Mop Philosophers like to do.
What do you think?  You can yea or nay in the comments and if there are enough "yea's" for the classic book idea I'll put the first Mop Philosophy Book Club book out later this week.  Of course if you are a "yea" and you have suggestions please leave those in the comments too.
Beet salad with fresh thyme.
Well it's a Monday and you know what that means: cleaning.  Specifically today I'm giving the kitchen a real clean, then I'll be making a beet salad to go along with some roasted chicken we're having for dinner.
I hope your own Monday goes well and that all of your chores get crossed off your list!

Denim and Delft

I just had to add a couple of things from Brora to my summer wardrobe.  It started with my frying neck.  Do you experience this phenomena?  It doesn't seem to matter how much sunscreen I slather all over my neck and upper chest, the sun still burns my skin.  I don't know how that happens but I have the answer to The Neck Fry: a linen scarf from Brora.
Linen Stripe Scarf in Delft Blue
The scarf is a beautiful loose linen weave in the most tremendous shade of delft blue with a slight gray stripe running through it.  It looks great with white, with navy, black and denim.
Speaking of denim I ordered this Cotton Textured Cardigan from Brora as well, in the colour Denim.
It has five stars in the ratings because it is indeed a five star sweater.  I'm wearing mine over a plain navy tee shirt, Goldsign jeans and the delft blue linen scarf.  The cardigan has a chunky knit yet it is light and fresh on the body, it blocks the sun (and I love the long sleeves) but it doesn't overheat.

Happy Day, Dollfaces!

The Portrait of a Lady
Henry James
I am really excited about this first book club selection and I hope that you will read this novel, one of my all-time favourites, along with me so that we can have a good chat about it.  We'll meet here on Saturday, June 29th to begin our book club discussion.  Of course the post will remain open so if you can't check in on that first meeting day please feel free to drop in at any time.
Henry James was born in New York City in 1843 to a privileged and well-educated family and spent his youth traveling in Europe.  He attended Harvard Law School briefly but realized he wanted to focus on his writing, by all accounts he was a hard worker and enjoyed early success as a novelist.
His older brother, William James, was an important American philosopher.

I first read The Portrait of a Lady nearly twenty years ago but it is one of those novels that has really stayed with me.  I'm certainly curious to read it again and observe the effect the novel will have on my thinking at this stage of my life.

Henry James excelled at observing Americans living in Europe and his style of psychological realism really explores the idea of the individual American personality set in the "old-world" customs of European society.
The Portrait of a Lady was written in the 1880's but went on to undergo revisions in 1908.  It is considered by many to be Henry James' greatest work.
It has been published many times and it was fun for me to find these different book covers.  I hope that you will be able to find a copy in your local library or in a used book store.
I decided to buy my own copy of the book to celebrate the occasion, it's one I'd like my daughters to read as well so hopefully I'll be sharing it around my household.
If you'd like to buy a copy you can check out this option on amazon.com.
Here is an option on amazon.ca.
Last but not least, here is the amazon.uk option.
I hope that you'll join me on the 29th of June for our first book club, and if you don't care for the selection this time around check back in July, maybe you'll enjoy the next classic pick.
Happy reading my friends and enjoy your weekend!

The thing about gathering inspiration on Pinterest is this: you'll end up compiling lots of different styles that you might want to replicate, but actually doing so is a different issue.  Rarely does anything look so charming in real life as it might on Pinterest in front of a swan fountain.

Well one can only try.  I found this linen dress on Lands' End for real cheapie.
Women's Pleated Linen V Neck Dress
My original idea for this post was to discuss pairing something cheapie with higher end accessories.  Then I thought I'd better come clean and just confess that I was trying to copy a Pinterest image.
The belt is the Linen Stretch Belt from Brooks Brothers.  I like it with the white.
My linen dress is not quite as fetching as the swan fountain version.
This one comes to just below the knee.
The cognac leather sandals are the best bit.
So comfy, they are La Canadienne mid heel sandals.
I don't know about you but I adore Pinterest.  So many people with such a good eye for images, it's a treasure trove!
I hope you are well this week.

May Flowers
The peonies in my own garden will be blooming soon and the excitement is palpable.
Plain and Simple Goldsign Jeans.
What I've been wearing.
I've been busy doing different things lately: working outside in the garden, trotting over to pilates class and tackling some big cleaning projects at home.  I think the change in activity has led to a change in what I'm actually wearing (as opposed to what I think I will be wearing).  I just want plain and simple right now.

I adore Goldsign jeans, they fit so well.  I like this pair in the dark navy wash, they almost don't look like jeans.  Paired with a fitted navy top it becomes a perfect base outfit: add a blazer, a scarf, a sweater, throw on some shoes, it doesn't matter, it's all going to look good and be easy.
Navy blue perfect-fit tee shirt.
Speaking of blazers, can we talk about JCrew linen in the form of a throw-on yet polished jacket?  You might remember that I have a JCrew blazer in white linen that I bought last year in New York City.  Yup, I still wear that thing all the time.  Sometimes I want a neutral, slightly longer option and my eye has been lighting on this one:
Linen jacket in khaki.
The thing about a khaki jacket is this: you can wear it with navy, but it also looks terrific with a base outfit in black cotton.
Basic black cotton capri pants.

Long pencil skirt in black cotton.

Again with the simple tee shirt, but in black.
Or white, khaki is brilliant with white.
Goldsign jeans in ecru wash.

Goldsign skirt in ecru wash.

I might pump up my wardrobe of basics from JCrew.  (There is a tempting offer right now for Canadians: code GMCAN15 gets you 25% off your entire purchase with free shipping and free returns, good until June 30th.  This means you don't have to Pay To Try On.)
My eye is not drawn to prints or fancy fabrics right now, but sturdy cotton in basic reliable colours.  I haven't been pre-occupied with dressing in such a non-fussy way in many years.  I seem to be channeling colour and design in different areas: my outfits are plain but my garden is looking promising!
What is keeping you busy?  Are you looking at prints and colours or are you drawn to a more basic wardrobe like I am these days?

JCrew Goldwyn Dress 2009

I found a dress on ebay last month that I thought I'd share with you: the JCrew Goldwyn dress.
It is constructed of a natural linen with gold silk trim, I think it's so summery.
It has pockets.
You can see Gigi in this dress right here.  I think she looks amazing in it.
The dress has this beautiful criss-cross back.  Look at the soft cotton lining.

The skirt of the lining has a petticoat ruffle, such a pretty touch.  The inside hem is lined with a wide gold bias tape.  JCrew at one time excelled at these little dressmaker details.
I like the dress with my silver Chie Mihara sandals.  They have a gold buckle which sets off the iridescent sheen of the silver leather.

It's worth it to do a "pre-owned JCrew" search of ebay once in a while, these little treasures can be found and they are usually quite affordable.
Hope you are well and happy today.

Green Twine

Garden chives wrapped in green twine.
This green garden twine is pleasing me very much these days.  I found it at the garden store and I've been using it for everything, it's a humble bit of string yet it's the perfect shade of green, just the thing for tying up some herbs from the garden.
I hopped on my bicycle the other evening to go visit a friend and I wrapped up these chives on my way out of the garden.  Garden chives are good in everything and like all herbs high in phytonutrients.  I'm adding them to lunch and dinner these days.
I'm planning to finish planting my herb and flower garden today.  I've got some Sweet Cicely going in, some Lovage and about twelve more lavender plants.
Have an excellent day Tooties.

Lilacs and Lily of the Valley from my garden.
Lily of the Valley is one of my favourite spring flowers and I didn't even know that it is poisonous, did you?  Handle with care and definitely don't eat it.
I have a new dish soap that works well and looks fetching perched at the edge of the sink:  Mrs. Meyer's Basil Dish Soap.  It's so weird because the lavender version of this soap gives me a massive headache, but this one causes no ill effects.  It smells wonderful, though I don't think it smells like basil at all.

You're going to think I'm CRAZY but I had a Chef to my house for dinner last night.
Bravery or madness, let's go with the latter.  Anyway it was fine, I kept it simple and I did not cry.
I served roasted asparagus with Nigella's Ricotta Tart.  You can see her recipe HERE.
Nigella serves hers with radicchio but I think we can all agree that it would be delicious with almost any grilled or roasted vegetable.
The finished tart with fresh thyme.
Our main course was this simple yet effective chicken recipe, also Nigella's.  You can see her recipe for this divine dish right HERE.
I served it with roasted rosemary potatoes and a very light pinot grigio.
We had a great time, the Chef and his partner have a lovely family of three children who were so cute and interesting.  There's almost nothing better than a conversation with a four year old.

I hope your week is off to a fresh start.
